The Otay Ranch Mustangs welcomed the Bonita Vista Barons on their homecoming night this past Friday. The Barons pulled off a close game and took home their second league win in a row with the score being 13-14.

The first half was a battle of endurance for both teams. After two quarters and a missed field goal by Bonita, the scoreboard remained at 0-0.

“Going into the second half we knew it was going to be a battle,” said junior and wider receiver Abraham Kinghorn and indeed it was.

Within the first three minutes of the third quarter, Otay Ranch opened the scoreboard with a touchdown making it 7-0. Six minutes later, Otay Ranch continued to dominate scoring yet again, but a missed extra point kept the game at 13-0. Going into the fourth quarter Bonita knew a comeback would be hard but not impossible. With only 9 minutes remaining in the game, Baron quarterback connected with junior Ethan Williams scoring a touchdown for Bonita.

“I couldn’t have done it without my team,” said Williams.

The teamwork was clear in the final 5 minutes of the game when junior and running back Barrington Miller ran the ball for 68 yards scoring another touchdown and bringing the Barons on top of the Mustangs with the score 13-0.

“Being able to score felt amazing,” said Miller.

Although the Barons were on top, the game was not over yet. The mustangs drove the ball to the 20 yard line and with 15 seconds left in the game, they attempted a field goal to win it. The ball was kicked and just barely missed the uprights giving Bonita their second back to back win and leaving them in first place in the metro-mesa league. Now the team is gearing up to play league rivals the Eastlake Titans next week.

“We have the first two games under our belt and now we are going for the third one,” says head coach Chris Thompson.
