Bonita Vista High Girls Water Polo won the league title on Friday, Feb. 9 by beating Hilltop High School with a final score of 11-3. As of their last home game of the season, this was the Barons’ senior night celebration as well.

Currently, there are three seniors on BVH’s team who will be graduating this June: co-captain Brianna Villalva, co-captain Juliana Pierce, and Giovanna Ikeda. Previous to starting the game, the three seniors were congratulated by team members and audience members.

“It felt good because usually, we don’t get this many people to come to our games, like a lot of people I feel like don’t know about our games so it feels good that the seniors have such a big crowd to help cheer them on,” junior, #11 and top scorer this game Jasmyn Austin said.

As the sun set and reflected across the pool, Pierce, #7, drove the ball forward at the beginning of each new quarter. During the fourth quarter of the game, Pierce scored three goals making her the second top scorer of the game.

“I was hoping I was going to score just one this game. I just wanted to win so I just fought my hardest to put the ball in the cage,” Pierce said.

The fourth quarter started with BVH players numbers 1, 7, 10, 12, 11, 6, and 5. With 44 seconds left in the game, HHS scored their last point making their total points three. Since BVH still won by eight points, they will now continue to play in the playoffs and already won the metro league banner after doing so last year.

“I’m really grateful that we won the last game of the season and that our seniors were able to end their season with a win,” Aquatics Ed coach Andrea “Betty,” Alexander said. “I was disappointed with the way it started; it was a very tight game and it shouldn’t have been [and I’m] excited that we ended on a high note right before playoffs. Right now we’re ranked one, I don’t know if we are going to go in[to playoffs] ranked number one, I’ll find out tomorrow morning and then hopefully we just keep winning.”
