BVH cross country blasts through first meet
On Friday, March 5 at 3:00 p.m. Bonita Vista High (BVH) varsity boys’ cross country began the first meet of 2021 against Otay Ranch High (ORH). Juniors Pierce Manson and Enrique Aranda, senior Jonathan Siegel and junior Max Anderson were the top runners of the boys’ race, according to BVH varsity girls’ runner and junior Lauren Salt.
Following the varsity boys’ race was the varsity girls’ at 3:30 p.m. with the BVH lady barons beating ORH. The top runners of this race were senior Sequoia Kriss, Salt, junior Diandra Jara and junior Savanna Sierra.
“It felt great to finish the race. It’s been so long since my last cross country season and therefore I forgot the anxious yet excited feeling I have during and before a race. I was so proud of my team and how much we’ve all improved!!” Salt said.

I’m glad that my instincts were right on this. I had consulted Coach Arciaga, the head of the Athletics department at BVH, to ask him how it’d be possible, safe, and/or appropriate for students to begin sports given San Diego’s COVID-19 status.
I don’t know if students are taking COVID-19 tests prior to their meets, but if they aren’t, this is a public health concern. People hyperventilating for 15-30 minutes amongst other runners is not safe whatsoever.
Pre-Pandemic, I looked forward to running XC and T&F for my senior year, and now that these sports are readily available, I still know in a heartbeat that I would rather prevent tragedies in my community than “enjoy” the rest of my senior year carelessly.
