Captains speak

Read this issue’s Captain’s Speak to learn about four different perspectives, from four different BVH student-athletes, about one topic. As several BVH sports teams commence or approach the end of their season, four sports captains answered the question, “What does sportsmanship mean to you?”

Kaylyn Buchanon-Lamb, Varsity Girls’ Basketball Captain

Good sportsmanship to me is when all people who are playing in the game and watching the game in the stands treat each other with respect. I know sometimes we get in heated moments during the game, but it’s all love at the end of the day.

Keala Nunes, Roller Hockey co-Captain

I believe that sportsmanship is the ability to play hard while maintaining respect for the opponent. Despite how the other team is playing, you must hold your head up high and play the game with fairness. It’s easy to let your emotions get ahead of you when playing, especially in the heat of the moment, but it’s vital to keep your composure; to step up and be the bigger person. Self-control is also key to a player with great sportsmanship. Ultimately, this sets the right example for your teammates and keeps the team spirit high.

Joel Isaac Lopez, Wrestling team Captain

I believe being able to show good sportsmanship means that you’re able to show mutual respect.

Sylvanna Olivas, Girls’ Water Polo co-Captain

Sportsmanship to me means being respectful no matter the outcome of a game or situation. My team and I always acknowledge every win and loss and try to stay positive through everything. It means always keeping your head up and knowing that there will always be wins and losses.
