On Saturday Nov. 24 students of BVH crusader: Healin Lee, Elizabeth Hoffman, Cielo Muniz Sigala, Amanda Cortes and Isabella Garcia came together to create a variety of delicious desserts in preparation for the holiday season. The goal was to find out whether homemade treats truly outshine store-bought options. They decided to put two classic favorites to the test: homemade banana bread versus Trader Joe’s store-bought banana bread, and homemade chocolate chip cookies versus Hans & Harry’s chocolate chip cookies. With excitement and a sense of friendly competition, the students gathered all the necessary ingredients and carefully followed the instructions for each of the recipes. From mashing ripe bananas for the banana bread to measuring out the perfect amount of chocolate chips for the cookies, the team worked together with enthusiasm and attention to detail. Once all four desserts were ready, it was time for the ultimate taste test. With eager anticipation, each of the treats was carefully tasted and judged based on texture, flavor, and overall quality. After much deliberation, the group came to a unanimous conclusion: the homemade banana bread and Hans & Harry’s chocolate chip cookies were the clear winners!

About the Contributors
Amanda Cortes, Editor-at-Large
Hello, I am a junior at BVH and this year is my third year as a staff member for the Crusader. This year I am the Editor-at-Large, and I have previously served the role of Arts and Culture Editor and Staff Writer. I joined newspaper because I love to write and I recognize the crucial role journalists play in their communities by using their writing skills to give voices a plaform. Aside from newspaper I am also an active member in BVH’s Speech and Debate and Mock Trial program.
Fun fact: I love british boy bands (and everything about the UK, except their immigration crisis), my favorite being The 1975.
Cielo Muniz Sigala, Editor-in-Chief
Hi! I am a junior at BVH and this is my third year on the Crusader staff. This year I am Co Editor-in-Chief and was previously an Opinion Editor and News Editor. I joined newspaper, mainly because of a family member who mentioned it, but also because I wanted to try something new and improve my other skills. Throughout the past three years, I have built a community with new people and with my school environment. I have learned the importance of providing a voice to people who cannot express it and also expressing my own voice. Outside of newspaper, I participate in Mock Trial, M.e.Ch.a, Green Team, Octonauts Club and the BVH Studies Group.
Fun Fact: I am an aunt!

Elizabeth Hoffman, Opinion Page Editor
Hi! I am a sophomore at BVH and it is my first year on the Crusader. My primary role on staff is
Opinion Page Editor and my supplemental jobs are Photographer and Staff Writer! I decided to
join newspaper because my friend recommended it and writing is something I am very
passionate about. I believe journalism provides an outlet to share my voice and the voices of
BVH students, which has extreme value to our development as a society. Outside of
newspaper, I participate in the Speech & Debate team, TEAM Tutoring, TEDx, Pickwick Club,
and I am helping plan and facilitate this year’s Bonitafest.
Fun fact: I read 53 books last year (2023)!
Healin Lee, Arts & Cultures Editor and Podcast Host
Hello! I am a sophomore at BVH, and this is my first year on the Crusader staff. This year I am the Arts and Culture Editor and Podcast Host. I joined Newspaper this year because my older sister was previously on Newspaper. I had seen the community that she was involved in, and wanted to experience it for myself. I also enjoy interviewing, podcasting and writing articles. Outside of Newspaper, I am a dancer, I play the piano and I also teach younger students.
Fun Fact: I speak four languages and am left-handed
Isabella Garcia, Editor-in-Chief
Hello! I am a senior at BVH, and I have been on the Crusader staff for all four years now. This year I am Co Editor-in-Chief and was previously the Editor-at-Large, Sports Editor and Sports Copy-Editor. The reason I originally joined newspaper was because I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and try something new. I also really enjoy reporting and taking photos at school and sporting events on and off campus. Outside of newspaper, you can find me playing as a midfielder and defender for BVH’s varsity field hockey and varsity girls’ lacrosse teams.
