Barons Speak

Students at BVH respond to the question: Do you think the United States should get involved in the Ukraine-Russian conflict?

Jack Fan, freshman

“The U.S. should not get involved in the Russian and Ukraine conflict [because] American diplomatic relationships with both sides are mixed; With Ukraine, the U.S. politically supports weapons, but when Ukraine did go to war, the U.S. decided to step down. Ukranians really want the U.S. [to get] involved. But, in [some] situations, the U.S. can’t because Russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world and if the U.S. gets involved, the world probably would step down.”

“I think the U.S should intervene because they’re kind of obligated to help, because [they are under the] the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, known as NATO. I think it’s a duty [for] the U.S [to help] as an ally because an attack on one ally is an attack on all allies. Even though Ukraine isn’t part of NATO, we need to see that lives [are] being lost. So the U.S should do whatever it takes [to help Ukraine] because it is one of the most powerful countries in the world that could help people in the long run.”

“[Militarily,] I wouldn’t say so. This is gonna sound really rude and mean, but Ukraine isn’t as valuable as an ally. The risks of including putting troops [because the costs] outweigh the benefits that would be gained. We would be possibly [be] saving lives, [but] we don’t even know if that would help. Second of all, that could provoke Russian retaliation, which could lead to a war.  I do think that [the U.S.] should be supporting Ukraine financially and politically with the sanctions.”

“While I don’t think it’s the U.S.’s responsibility to be policing the world, I do think that human rights are important and we should be doing things, like accepting refugees and sending humanitarian aid.”
