Teachers say

What role should teachers play in forming students’ political beliefs?

I feel as an educator it’s our responsibility to educate and to give students the facts and present multiple viewpoints. I feel that the students need to develop their own opinions, it’s not my job to tell students what I think is right. It’s my job to inform, educate and tell facts for the student to create their own standpoint.”

I don’t think it’s my role to encourage or discourage any political beliefs I want my students to research. I think students need to grow. I don’t think it’s something that is my place either. Really, I think that is something you discuss in the home, but I give the students the tools where they can make an educated decision about things.”

“The social science teacher’s role is to supply students with fact and standards-based learning, educate them in civics, and develop in them the skills they need to independently form well-reasoned opinions, communicate those effectively, and be contributing members of society.”

I think that teachers should be providers of fact-based information, but that they should not particularly necessarily endorse a specific candidate actively to students, or try to encourage students to do a particular thing.”
