He wanted the high of winning but the feeling was not everything he needed. This was one of the main things that spoke to me because we live in a time where success is mainly recognized by status. The film does not showcase ambition as either good or bad but as a push that can drive people forward, as well as leading them to self destruction if taken too far. The balance between the two sides makes it feel more realistic and personal, rather than being a criticism of ambition.

The structure of Marty Supreme adds immensely to this message. The film’s fast pace, loud sound effects and quick editing can feel overstimulating at parts which is something many critics on IMDB point out. But I think that director Josh Safdie’s intentions were purposeful. The chaotic build of the story reflects Marty’s mental state and the pressure he puts on himself to gain more and more. During the motel scene, multiple things happen at a time. First Marty falls through the roof in the bathtub, falling on Mo the dog, and injuring Mo’s owner, Ezra. Although Marty causes chaos, he shows little care and still does not stop after this, taking the money Ezra gave him that was originally for taking Mo to the vet, and using it to play in more ping pong matches. Instead of slowing down the film to explain everything, the audience is thrown into the world of Marty. Causing them to experience all the stress and excitement with him. Many viewers across the internet said that the film felt exhausting, but that reflects the toll that aspiration had on Marty emotionally. The overwhelming factor did not weaken the film but instead strengthen its impact.

Although much of the criticism that Marty Supreme got regarded the prioritization of shock value over storytelling, I believe that the storytelling connects deeply with its style. The intensity and fast pacing were not distractions, but tools that convey the film’s major theme in a strong way. The movie may not be for everyone, especially those who are used to slow, traditional narratives, but that does not make the film any less impactful. Instead, it takes significant stylistic risks in order to be different from other films.
